The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences or the Faculty of Forestry in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The award alternates between the Faculties of Agricultural Science and Forestry on a two year basis beginning in 1995 with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.
