Established in 2001 by Karin Hilker in honour of her late husband, along with friends of Dr. Brian C. Smith, M.Sc. 1979. Dr. Smith came to McGill as a post-graduate fellow in the Physics Department, having completed his Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics at McMaster University in 1975. He worked as a research associate until he decided to enter McGill's Computer Science program in 1977.
